What Are the Types of Sedation Dentistry?
- Nitrous Oxide – Also known as “laughing gas,” nitrous oxide can create a mild effect for patients with slight to moderate dental anxiety. The gas is administered through a nasal mask, and you should begin to feel more content and relaxed after a few minutes of breathing it in. Patients will also recover from this type of sedation very quickly, which is ideal if you need to get back to a busy schedule after your appointment.
- Oral Conscious Sedation – Oral conscious sedation will be prescribed by Dr. Silva, and the patient will take it at a designated time before their visit. Although you will remain awake, you’ll enter a deep state of relaxation. Patients undergoing this type of sedation will need an escort to bring them to and from our dental office.
- IV Sedation – IV sedation is administered through an injection site, and it is ideal for patients with more severe dental-related fear. The effects begin rapidly, and we will be able to adjust the dosage as needed to ensure maximum comfort. Patients will technically remain conscious but likely won’t remember anything about their visit once they’ve recovered. You will also need an escort when undergoing this type of sedation.
